We know that music can make us feel certain ways, and it’s also becoming clear that the default mode network part of our brain (DMN), which is related to our attention plays a role in our happiness.
Taruffi et all investigated the effects of sad and happy music on mind-wandering and the default mode network.
They found that when we listen to sad music, we withdraw our attention inwards and engage in spontaneous, self referential cognitive processes.
Mind wandering increases with sad music, even of the same tempo and volume.
Attention, or a decrease in mind wandering can be present with happy music, in particular with a higher tempo.
Yet another tool we can potentially use to influence default mode network activity.
