Having infinite choice today and finite time means we need to gloss over things (start to ignore) now for our life to run.
BUT, When we are trying to make headway in training, in order to get results, certain things need to happen in a few key life areas.
Because getting results relies on more than just training (diet, lifestyle..), working towards a framework in these other areas (defined by you) can help to ensure we don’t ignore the KEY stuff, and we keep getting the results we want.
Here are a few non-negotiables you could consider working towards that help support getting results in your training.
- 8-9 hours of sleep per night. This is set by a regular bed time.
- The highest quality food you can afford. I try to hit free range meats and organic fruit or dairy
- Some direct sunlight, every day
- Scheduled quiet practice. For me this is meditation, daily.
- Training. I have a non-negotiable of 2 sessions per week plus some regular mobility work.
- Unplugged, or “offline” time with your family/partner
That might be it.. Once the framework is in place and is working well with you, your family and friends, you get to almost forget about this stuff. The non-negotiables are a given, around which you fit the other stuff.
This frees up a huge amount of mental energy.
Having a framework helps me navigate fluctuating work loads, travel, varying energy levels. There needs to be a pretty special circumstance for me to miss one of these and I’ll actively design other areas of life to meet them.
