When You’re Feeling Flat

Exercise or training should feel good most of the time.

If you feel tired, drained, or sick, it’s a sign that your system is a little cooked.

Maybe you have a lot at work, or something going on at home. Or you have eaten poorly..

Often, people ask me if they should still come to training when this happens.

Well, it depends. Usually we are best served by a very low level of movement, but that’s IF there has been good sleep beforehand. If sleep is already compromised, then that is often a sign of the  underlying state of the system (usually stressed), so we look at that first.

BUT, the biggest thing is for us to NOTICE how we actually feel in the first place. Before stimulants, pain killers or other vices. Most people continue in a daily grind with very little awareness of the state of the underlying system. There’s a lot of physiological load (stress), without enough resources, but this has become the norm.

So, if we can notice low energy, we can see if it is a pattern. If we can see it is a pattern, we can choose to create change.

Creating change will have FAR more impact in the intermediate/long run than whether or not you turn up to training in one particular session.
