Confidence and Learning

Experiential learning is where it’s at. Hands down.

You can read all the books you want, but really it comes down to that which you have personally experienced.

With physical training, training the mind or even business, we ultimately “learn” once we emmerse ourselves.

Do you want to learn how to “get healthy,” “lose weight,” learn a handstand? The only way you will know is after having done it. Prior to that, it’s theoretical.

So, this brings us to a Gap. The gap where we need to jump into the experience in order to truly learn everything we can about it.

Often, what I see lacking is confidence. Because someone has never done it before, they know they can’t do it now, so the mind projects that they’ll have trouble in the future. The problem is that this isn’t correct. This is a recency bias, which is self-limiting.

We need to learn to create the confidence that we need. This is a skill that we can practice.

In the gym, there are an overwhelming number of times where people don’t believe they can do the task at hand. So half of the upfront effort is based around helping them create the confidence needed.

A few things you can do:

  1. Ask someone if they think the task or endeavour is reasonable for you in the time frame you are looking at. You need someone honest and with prior experience.
  2. Realise the limitation is likely in your head
  3. From above, learn methods to “get out of your head” or put another way: “Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway” as Susan Jeffers wrote.
